THE MANUSCRIPT
  • THE DISCOVERY OF THE MANUSCRIPT

In 2010 a member of the Hasidut of the Gur Rebbe found an anonymous manuscript in his attic. The book was saved from disposal by his grandfather only because it contained the stamp of the first Rebbe of Radomsk, Rabbi Shlomo Ha-Cohen Rabinowitz (1801-1866). Curious about the value of the manuscript, the grandson contacted a dealer, who in his turn consulted an expert. To his surprise, the expert recognized the distinct writing of De Lonzano, and realized that he was holding a unique and treasured autograph.

  • WHEN AND WHERE WAS IT WRITTEN?

Menahem de Lonzano did not note at the end of his manuscript, as authors often did, either the place or the time in which he wrote it. Yet in one place he noted that "the exile has lasted 370 years …Menahem DL". This meant that according to the Jewish calendar the manuscript was copied 370 years after the beginning of the sixth millennium of the creation of the universe, which is the year 1610 CE, exactly 400 years before it was rediscovered.

As for the place, it is likely that it was copied in Egypt, as De Lonzano mentions negotiations with a one of the great scholars living in Egypt at that time.
