ESSAY ON KAFKA

Zur zehnten Wiederkehr seines Todestages, 1934

This is Benjamin's personal copy of his essay commemorating Franz Kafka on the occasion of the ten year anniversary of his death, written in exile in 1934. Benjamin was one of the first scholars who dealt intensively with Kafka's work and its Jewish context. In this text he also discusses a number of famous works by Kafka, including The Trial. Like the others, Benjamin sent this typescript with his own handwritten corrections, to Scholem, who had been living in Jerusalem for over a decade.
